Life here in the mountains has seen its share of hardships including depressions, snow blockades, avalanches, crime and disease. In the 1950s during a severe downturn, citizens began work on the Christ of the Mines Shrine.
Not long after completion the mines again began to prosper. The Shrine was also credited as a protecting force in 1978 when Lake Emma flooded the Sunnyside Mine. Not one miner was killed in the incident but by 1991 mining operations ceased in the area, with the Sunnyside being the last mine to close. Many people still find themselves returning to the area, searching for something that will make their lives a little richer.
